O Football friends

The tumult and violence of the nineties crippled all aspects of society in the republics of former Yugoslavia, and the region’s young people continue to be affected by their countries’ recent past. In 2005, Football Friends was created to help this younger generation transform their lives and to help heal the fragmented societies in which they are growing up.
In cooperation with organisations such as the British Council and various municipalities, Football Friends facilitates educational initiatives in conjunction with non-formal educational institutions to enhance youth development. The organisation currently runs football programmes across Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia which have served more than 15000 participants since 2005.

Our mission is to act regionally across the Balkans by involving NGO's, educational organizations & individuals and relevant institutions to achieve the common goal of effective social development through football. Our vision is to develop a regional network of social development projects and initiatives which will help improving lives of socially deprived children from the Balkans and the area of South-East Europe.

And most important tool for our success is football as universal language and very similar common language that all participants understand.

As we see in our daily operations the real power of our concept, we are commited to pursue with it. We want to stay genuine and close to the needs of the communities. The development of the Football Friends concept since 2007, with huge support from FIFA and streetfootballworld, is the best proof we can offer. Additionally, the young participants of 2007 are the young leaders of 2011 and the implementers of the City Leagues - they are the next generation of peace in the Balkans region.

Our partnership with Football for Hope enabled us to understand and embrace the idea that football is a powerful tool not only for spreading the ideas of sports, healthy lifestyle and fun, but also a useful platform for concepts of improving the quality of life, effective communication and society development. That is why we sucessfully re-defined our initial focus of creating the opportunity for children to engage with football to developing and implementing projects and activities with much broader scope - besides the sports element, we pay a lot of attention and efforts to the area of social development. We highly appreciate great strategic support and best practice examples provided by Football for Hope - these, together with financial support, enabled us to successfully implement many of our previous projects. Our participation at the Forum 2009 and the Festival 2010, as well as the adidas Exchange Programme implemented in Foca (April 2010) were the best possible arenas for the re-definition of our scope and provided key insights into the opportunities of Development through Football.

We are determined to continue our efforts to improve the lives of young people in the Balkan region. The results so far are successfully implemented European Festival and vivid City Leagues across the region. We strongly believe that continuous work would enable us to strenghten the regional concept and leave a long lasting foot print in the region and enable to other regions to use similar concept.
