Season starts at Banja Luka

The first tournament of the Football Friends regional league, under auspices of the Football Friends Foundation, a member of the Street Football World network, was held in Banjaluka from 3 to 4 December 2011. The slogan of this year’s league, that has been running for 5 years, was - “The League of games, friendships, socializing and love.” The sports centre “Sport Team”, a venue of the event, saw a final which was won by the Gorazde team that beat the Football Friends team from Srebrenik by 5:2.

This year the regional Football Friends League, which has been supported by FIFA through its Football for Hope initiative, gathers girls and boys aged 14 to 17 from three countries – Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro – and from 10 cities – Banjaluka, Foca, Mostar, Zenica, Doboj, Gradiska, Niksic, Belgrade, Srebrenik and Gorazde.

Great honour and pleasure to greet the participants and give them support fell on two top-level athletes who were born in the area, former footballers that played for “eternal rivals” – Velimir Sombolac, a former Partizan player and winner of the Olympic gold medal with the national team and Vinko Marinovic, a former Red Star player.

Apart from the street football games, the teams had dinner together and took part in workshops in which they presented their own cities.

The main idea behind Football Friends is that there are not only wins and losses and that the league exists as a good platform for linking and education of young people through organization of local and regional tournaments in various cities across the Balkans.
